by light aircraft from the main island of Mahe, some
145 miles south west of Mahe, Desroches Island
is the largest of the Seychelles coralline islands, approximately 4
miles long by 1 mile wide surrounded by extensive white sand beaches
and the interior interwoven with an abundance of coconut plantations,
meandering tracks
and walks. This is truly a fascinating tropical island full of
wonderful natural suprises around every corner
not to mention the ponderous giant tortoises that you are bound
to meet during your stay. As well as the outdoor interests,
the island's extensive library and reading area provides a subtle tropical hideaway in which to catch up on the history of Desroches.
To
explore the island guests have the use of their bicycles to tour
the island's
delightful pathways and trails exploring the local staff village and
the numerous private coves and beaches. The service staff will provide
a picnic to take with you should you want to be spend a few hours
away from the main island centre. Couple this with a
gentle game of tennis (floodlit) or boule followed by sundowner
cocktails and you will be ready to enjoy the excellent cuisine in the
main restaurant at evening dinner.
Desroches has an excellent watersport centre offering good snorkelling, scuba diving and
really top class game and fly -fishing. The island's PADI dive and watersport
centre provides snorkelling and diving tuition. The island boasts a
choice of fourteen classified dive sites including the famous Canyon
and Desroches drop. If you are not into underwater exploits then try the
kayaks and canoes to paddle around within the protected lagoons. Great fun for
the children.
The island has
a range of delightful beachfront accommodation ranging from 1 bedroom
Beach Suites, 3 bedroom Dibwa Retreats, sleeping up to 6 persons, 4
bedroom Beach Villas, sleeping up to 8 persons and 5 bedroom Dibwa
Retreats, sleeping up to 10 persons. All suites and villas are air conditioned with their own living areas leading
directly onto the beach. The bathrooms have double basins, a covered outdoor
bath, outdoor showers, seperate bidet and wc. In-room dining
can be arranged for that special evening. All Villas have a private infinity swimming pool, private
lounge, air-conditioned bedrooms with bathroom facilities, fully
equipped kitchen, gardens and sun deck and are located in delightful
tropical garden setting with ocean views. Desroches will provide you
with your own cook/villa master if required for part or all of your
stay.
The
main pavilion restaurant overlooks the main swimming pool and serves a delightful
range of Creole and International cuisine. Scattered along the beach are
thatched gazebos served by an informal beach bar for your "feet in the sand"
lunch and evening dinners. In-villa dining is offered to all guests.
Balinese
masseuses look after both body and mind in the Desroches Island Spa,
offering a range of soothing and invigorating treatments. Enjoy your
treatments in either the Spa centre, your own suite or on the beach in
the shade of the palm trees. Treatments are designed to relieve
stress, to detox and re-juvinate both body and mind.
Overall,
Desroches is an island full of gentle surprises and exotic fun. Boredom
is never an issue as there are always heaps of interests ranging
from a lazy day on the beach with a good book, an island cruise with
your qualified boat skipper or a gentle canoe voyage within the
safe confines of the reefs. The choices are yours.
