Our Opinion... “The
ultimate castaway, nature retreat. Bird Island is beautifully
simple with spacious bungalow accommodation, a fantastic restaurant,
small bar area and absolutely stunning beaches. A peaceful island
escape, extremely friendly and very well priced. See nature as it should be on magical island” |

This coral island of only 170 acres is the most
northerly of the Seychelles island group. Our many repeat clients liken this
little island to a jewel floating in the azure blue ocean. Acknowledged
worldwide as a true representation of an iconic Robinson Crusoe island,
yet offering good hotel service and smiling hospitality.
The
24 bungalows are spacious and in keeping with the island’s philosophy
of natural materials and non-sophistication. Each bungalow is
ventilated by a ceiling fan with louvered windows offering a very
relaxed and harmonious atmosphere. Extra sleeping space for an
additional person is available in the lounge area of each bungalow. |
Within the main pavilion, the restaurant
provides buffet-style Creole lunches and European-style dinners, while
the informal lounge area encourages one to relax and reflect on another
day in paradise.
Swimming
and snorkelling off Bird Island is magical. Totally surrounded by the
softest of white powdery sands, the island is home to at least twenty
different species of birds, including millions of sooty terns nesting
between May and October. Due to Bird Island's proximity to the
continental shelf, fishing is a popular sport, the catch often
finding its way to the evening's dinner table.
An active member of Green Globe, an international eco-tourism
organisation, Bird Island has been declared a private nature reserve,
with regular population counts, data collections and ringing of the
birds and turtles and of course strict vegetation management. Guests
are encouraged to join in with these activities. The island also conducts
a very successful turtle-tagging programme monitoring the growing
breeding population of the hawksbill and green turtles.
The
world’s largest land tortoise also resides on Bird Island. Named
Esmeralda, now identified as a female after many years of uncertainty, is claimed to be over two
hundred years old. Nature tours are organised three times a week by
qualified members of staff who are on hand every day to answer
questions and give advice on all aspects of the island's conversation
programme.
